Custom Home Design Decisions You Won’t Regret

“Honey…if we ever build a new home, I want (fill in the blank) feature…”  If you ever said that or heard it from your significant other, you’re not alone!  We’ve probably all said it at one time or another.  One of the greatest benefits of building a custom home is that you get to incorporate the designs or features, no matter how big or small, that you’ve always wanted and that are important to you.   Coming up with that “dream” design is one of the most enjoyable and exciting parts of the custom home building process.  Over the years Riteway Builders has built many custom homes, and we’ve learned that there are certain design decisions that you’ll never regret.

Location
Where you build is just as important as what you build.  Of course, some locations are more expensive than others, but no matter what your budget, there are choices you can make to maximize your enjoyment of the location.   Think about accessibility to shopping areas or services, orientation/direction of the home, noise from nearby streets or highways, views, proximity to neighbors, crime levels, schools in the area, and so on.  You won’t regret spending a little extra time and planning to find the very best location for your wants and needs.

Storage Space
“There’s just too much storage space in this home…”, said no one, ever.   We all do it, we accumulate lots of “stuff”.  You won’t regret having ample storage to find a home for it all.  Think about adding storage in each room.  Think about your current and future storage needs both inside and out.  Make sure you’ve designed a place to store your current toys, and toys (RV’s, Boats…) you might want to acquire in the future.

Infrastructure For Performance &  Energy Efficiency
Another advantage of building a custom home is that you can enhance the infrastructure of your home to improve performance and energy efficiency.  It’s probably no secret that some mass produced homes have had more focus on the elements that are visible to home buyers.  When you’re building your own home, you can ensure that what’s going on behind the walls and under the floor is top quality and efficient.  Think heating and cooling systems, insulation, electrical systems, plumbing, windows, siding, and so on…

The Kitchen
The kitchen has been and probably always will be one of the most important areas in your home.  You won’t regret taking some extra time and even spending a little extra money for a kitchen that is organized in a way that fits the needs and wants of your family.   Sometimes it helps to plan it in reverse – look at cabinets, furniture, and appliances first, then plan the kitchen layout accordingly, instead of trying to squeeze or make alterations so that everything fits in a space that is already built.

Lighting
Incorporating plenty of natural light into the design of your new home is something that you’ll appreciate for years to come.  Natural light adds a bright, open, and an inviting feeling to common living areas of a home. Some would even argue that plenty of sunlight contributes to better physical and emotional health.  When clients list some of the complaints they had with previous homes, lack of natural light is a common mention.   You don’t need to cram your home full of windows and skylights to achieve good light levels, just use some common sense on window placement, size, and how they work together with the electrical lighting and room design.

These are some of our suggestions, and we’d love to hear what design elements are a “must have” for you.  If you would like to talk about building a custom home in Meridian, Middleton, Emmett, Star, Eagle, or other surrounding areas – let’s talk!
